The skeletonized dial version plays with the concept of the original Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater watch, but here without the hand-painted landscape dial showing a river, forest, and waterfall. The latter element doubles as the seconds indicator, as a slowly spinning disc attempts to mimic the flow of water. There is something a bit more appealing for me (the gearhead) about this partially skeletonized model. It isn't that I didn't like the original in its full glory - I did - but rather that this version of the Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater mixes the mechanical art form Jaquet Droz is promoting in the watch, with just enough visuals to remind me of it on a regular basis. With the Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater on my wrist, I consider a day wearing the watch around town and the possible ensuing conversations. If there was ever a convention for conversation piece watches, the Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater might dutifully act as their mascot.
Women get three versions of the diamond-covered "exceptional" Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches. The reference 67543BC.ZZ.D002CR.01 has a black alligator strap and green emeralds on the dial with about 290 diamonds (16 carats) and another 12 baguette-cut emeralds. There is a similar ladies Royal Oak Offshore with a pink alligator strap and matching pink sapphires on the dial.
ABTW: Given your passion for watches, and your manufacturing experience, do you think we'll see an ICON-branded watch in the future?
What made the original Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15,000 Gauss watch special, was that it was the first Omega timepiece to contain the brand's Master Co-Axial movement parts. This was before Omega called its new anti-magnetic movements "Master Co-Axial" thus the > 15,000 Gauss name. Inside the watch is the now named Omega Master Co-Axial calibre 8507 automatic movement - named as such for its unique rotor (designed to look like a gun barrel). Otherwise the movement is the same as the caliber 8508 in the other Aqua Terra Master Co-Axial collection timepieces.
ABTW: You must have been exposed to quite a variety of watches there - what was your first grail watch?
When mixed with properly-sized blued steel hands, the silvery guilloche engraved dial is extremely legible, which is a testament to the enduring beauty of these dials. Without exaggerating, Breguet Classique dials reproduce a technique in wrist watch form that was originally developed for some of the world's best pocket watches that were made well over 200 years ago. Again, a simple survey of original Breguet timepieces will make that fact clear.

When people ask me about getting new mechanical watches for under 0, the first thing out of my mouth is always "get something from a Japanese watch maker like Seiko, Orient, or Citizen." I say this because for the most part, these companies produce the best quality "cheap" mechanical watches. I suppose that also goes for quartz watches, if you are into that. When I talk of quality, I don't just mean the movements, but also the cases, dials, straps, etc... Japanese watches are often the first "real" watches most watch lovers end up getting, and many people (even though seriously into luxury Swiss watches) find themselves buying Japanese watches for years.
Montblanc is now one of the most exciting brands under Richemont’s wide umbrella – thanks in no small part to Jerome Lambert’s leadership, the man who played a key role in making Jaeger-LeCoultre the powerhouse that it is today. And with SIHH 2015 just weeks away, the company has just released details of its latest watch, the Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum.
James Lamdin: Oh yes, the "Black Lung" is definitely part of the permanent collection!
Christophe Claret will produce two limited edition versions of the Christophe Claret Aventicum watch, with one in 18k white gold and one in 18k red gold. Each has some grade 5 titanium parts as well. On the rear of the watch is a further statement in Latin which reads "Perfice omnia facta vitae quasi haec postrema essent.” This translates into “perform every act in life as though it were your last.” I don't think that applies to timepiece buying, as watches like this were meant to be part of a larger collection and not your only timepiece. While the concept of the Christophe Claret Aventicum is interesting, I am not sure it is going to make sense to many watch lovers eager to see fresh complications from the mind of Mr. Claret who has spoiled us. My feeling is that, in its own way, the Christophe Claret Aventicum will be really impressive, but it will require some hands-on time with the piece for me to discover that in full.

As the official EPFL site quotes, "our prototype weighs four kilograms but we're already trying to miniaturise it so as to fit it in a wristwatch; the watch industry has expressed great interest in the project," said Professor Simon Henein, holder of the Patek Philippe Chair and director of Instant-Lab. IsoSpring differs from the pendulum, the spiral-balance wheel, and the tuning fork, the three oscillators used in clocks and watches, and the site refers to it as, "the first conceptual change in the mechanical watch in 200 years."
A. Lange & Söhne announced the A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour Le Mérite in late 2010 (hands-on here), and at the time, it was pretty much the be-all and end-all timepiece in Lange's history. Sure, their hugely impressive Double Split and a few other highly complicated pieces were also available, but even just the name of this new release indicated that it was something even more special. Today, A. Lange & Söhne released a new version of this remarkable piece, this time in a white gold case, available exclusively at the brand's boutiques around the world – with no word on it being a limited edition.
