Apple Watch Release: Final Details & Prices Watch Releases

It all starts with a vintage pocket watch movement that Zenith restored and decorated, known as the caliber 5011 (caliber 5011K). This movement is about 50mm wide, so you understand why the case itself is so large. I haven't discussed numbers yet, but from the look of the Zenith Pilot Type 20 Grand Feu you can tell it is huge - which it no doubt is. Back in our original article on the Zenith Montre d-Aeronef Pilot Type 20 watch, we talked more about what makes this movement special. What you need to know here is that it has 48 hours of power reserve, with the dial, subsidiary seconds dial, and power reserve indicator on the dial. The 5011 movement is also supposed to be pretty accurate - at least by reputation. A hint to that is the "Chronometre" text label on the dial of the watch. Oh, and the movement in this watch is also COSC Chronometer certified.

Throughout this series, we will always try and find both in-house as well as "external" alternatives to the Cost of Entry timepiece, as in today's luxury watch market, there simply is too much competition in any and every price segment to be reckoned with. However, we started this article by saying that we were setting out to discover the model with the most moderate price tag in a famous brand's line-up and in doing so, we have established that "you definitely get the uncompromising Rolex quality when it comes to fit, finish, execution."

Moreover, these are casual dressy watches with a lot of decorative value. Yes, there is a distinct "Japanese look" to them, but it is in a good way that feels more refined than designs such as this have looked in the past. The watch dial begins with a textured face with very legible hands filled with luminant. A flange ring has lume points for the hours as well as minute indicator. The sharply cut applied hour markers on the dial are good looking and help with overall legibility. The failure of most watches like this in the past has always been legibility, with a lot of good intent but a less-than-successful execution looking like less than the sum of its parts.

Necessary Data
>Brand: Parmigiani Fleurier
>Model: Atlante Flyback Chronograph Bugatti
>Price: ,000
>Size: 44mm wide x 14mm high (50mm lug to lug)
>Weight: 160g on strap
>Would reviewer personally wear it: Yes, absolutely
>Friend we'd recommend it to first: The guy who owns or aspires to own a supercar, who is sporty and does not want the de-facto Rolex Daytona, and for whom price is of little concern.
>Worst characteristic of watch: Not having a 12 hour subdial and the reverse pushers take a little getting used to. The movement, while striking and elegantly finished, is shown via a small sapphire glass window. I wonder if a solid caseback with some Bugatti imprint would have been better?
>Best characteristic of watch: The unique stripped skeleton dial and hand crafted rose gold case, just sublime.

I thought that I would then attend the watchmaking school for a year, and then make another attempt to get into the goldsmith school. That, of course, never happened. I now understand that watchmaking is much closer to my heart. But, as Vianney (Halter) says, "you never know!"

Trickle-down horology dictates that what is popular at the very top will eventually make its way down the ladder a bit. Not that Panerai is a "down ladder" brand, but compared to the typically 0,000 and up price of a Richard Mille, most might consider the mostly ,000-and-under price of a Panerai to be much more accessible. Suddenly, we have a lot of traditional brands (and to be fair, Panerai is a brand obsessed with its own traditions) have investigated how they too can integrate exotic materials into their timepiece families.

Announced on the eve of Baselworld 2015, Linde Werdelin has dropped a duo of Spidolite models that feature a new movement and updated dial designs. Officially launching the 4th generation of the Linde Werdelin Spidolite series, these limited edition pieces will be available later this month in either titanium or rose gold.

It isn't unusual to see new trends emerging on the back of current ones. In the days of small, delicate wristwatches, the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Worldtimer would have been dismissed for its proportions. But in this age of behemoths, worldtimers are afforded the requisite dial space to breathe. This not only favors historical models from IWC, but also their latest globe-trotting tool.

Las Vegas loves a major fight more than perhaps any other type of sporting event, and tomorrow at the MGM Grand will be busy, to say the least. Hublot's marketing strategy dictates their need to be there on the ground level and right in the ring. I look forward to seeing the outcome of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight, but perhaps, I am as much interested in seeing his watch collection for myself. hublot.com

Aside from the Bulgari Bulgari's blue dial which is new for 2015, Bulgari has added a blue-dialed version of their newer Bulgari Octo 38 in steel. Note that the blue dial color on the Bulgari Octo is exclusively available (at least in 2015) on the Bulgari Octo 38 and not the larger Octo. The Bulgari Octo 38 is a smaller version of the Bulgari Octo which is normally 41mm wide. I prefer the 41, but there is a lot to say for the Bulgari Octo 38 for those who like a more demure look on their wrist. Ironically enough, the Bulgari Bulgari and the Bulgari Octo are both Gerald Genta designs. In fact, most of the men's watch models at Bulgari today are Genta designs - which once again speaks to the lasting influence of the 20th century's greatest watch designer.

Casio and its Japanese colleagues should be heading smartwatch experimentation more than anyone else, and if you think about it, they could be trying to innovate a lot more now, even in regard to their non-connected G-Shock and Pro Trek models. Casio has been putting a lot of effort into improving or refining their core watches and adding some features such as GPS signal control to update the time and date in some models, but why is Casio suddenly so seemingly conservative?

Stylistically speaking, this is one of my favorite watches to hit the market this year – it's a shame that there are only going to be 28 of them! I love the symmetry of the dial, the luxuriousness of the 18k gold tourbillon bridges, the synchronized dance of the twin-tourbillons, and the NAC gray-coated face, finished with Geneva stripes. Aesthetically, this watch brings to mind one of my all time favorites, the MB&F Legacy Machine 1 (hands-on here), which, incidentally, also has two independent time indications, albeit governed by one single escapement. The Arnold & Son DTE Double Tourbillon Escapement Dual Time does add two tourbillons, transforming itself it into more of an horological heavyweight (not that the LM1 would be anything but a marvel of modern horology). It's no longer a new thing to display a tourbillon on the dial, but it does seem to be a sensible place to put it if your watch contains one. They are so interesting to look at. Even if you forget what it's there for, it still looks really, really cool. And two is always better than one, right?

The cargo capacity of the airplane we flew in on during the 15 minute flight from the neighboring island of St. Maarten was so small that my luggage arrived on the next flight without even as much as a courtesy notice from the airline. Assured by one of the carefree staff in the baggage claim area that my luggage would probably come on the next flight, I had no choice but to relax in the air conditioned waiting room for what was thankfully only about 30 minutes. During this time, I had ample time to inspect the less-then-surprisingly wealth of watch advertising, including one for Richard Mille pitching the finely made sport watches as "high performance machines for your wrist." Just over a small range of hills past the airport into the ocean, the regatta continued in full swing as sailors from around the world fought the wind and the waves.

On the surface of things, this watch looks like just another dressier piece that has had tritium tubes applied. A closer look shows us that things are a bit different, at least from other Ball watches I've seen.

One of the most remarkable announcements we received prior to the SIHH 2015 watch trade show was the upcoming release of Montblanc's e-Strap (debut article here), a smart wearable device option that would be first available on the upcoming Montblanc Timewalker Urban Speed watch. Precious little was known about how the e-Strap would behave in real life - and the actual models are not ready for real-world testing, but at SIHH 2015 with Montblanc, aBlogtoWatch got a hands-on look at one of the luxury industry's first major entrants into the world of smart electronic wearable devices.
